Irish Dentistry Awards 2018

By | Blog

January 2018 was a great way to start the year for Newpark Clinic! We were the finalists in 3 categories for the Irish Dentistry Awards 2018:

  • Best patient care
  • Most improved practice
  • Best high tech practice

Walking into the technicolour room in the Mansion House on the awards night, we instantly felt that all of our hard work from the year had finally paid off. We had a great night among the Irish dentists who came from all sides of the country- Galway, Limerick, Cavan and even Belfast!

We were even more ecstatic when it was announced over the microphone that we won the Highly Commended award for most improved practice! It is our mission to enrich lives and elevate confidence by using our continually updated skills to provide exceptional care and service to our patients. So, this award is a great reflection of our great efforts to persistently improve our skills, technology and presence for our patients.

We would like to thank our dedicated team for their tireless efforts throughout the year and we would like to thank our lovely patients as well, for helping shape our practice. With one Highly Commended award under our belt, just wait and see what the next year brings us!

Ceramic Braces Special Offer

By | Blog

We are excited to announce our special on ceramic braces (a.k.a. white or tooth-coloured braces) during the month of March! What’s included with our ceramic brace treatment?

Free consultation  |  €300 discount  |  Free teeth whitening  |  Free hygienist cleaning

Ceramic braces are white in colour, blending into your tooth’s natural shade, making them discreet and less noticeable than metal braces. They are suitable for most ages, but are most popular with adults and teenagers. The braces consist of small, square brackets that are made from a ceramic (white) material, a white coloured wire running through the brackets and tiny white elastic ties holding the wire in place. All 3 of these elements ensure the discreteness of the brace and the improvement of your smile!

Why Can’t I get a Price for Braces Over the Phone?

By | Blog

If deciding to get braces isn’t stressful and daunting enough, trying to get a price over the phone seems nearly impossible. Why are the receptionists at these orthodontic practices keeping the price a big secret? It’s the same product right, so why isn’t there a set rate?

Why you ask?

The fact is, there is no big secret or set rate. The orthodontic fee depends on your (or your child’s) teeth, the movement required, length of treatment, type of braces used and the Orthodontist’s experience. So, it’s nearly impossible to give an accurate price without seeing your teeth.

So let’s break the price determination down:

1.Position of Teeth and Movement

Teeth can come in all sorts positions. Some issues are easier to fix (like minor spacing) while others can take a considerable amount of time and work (like severe crowding). Some may have a mix of the issues. For example, individuals can have:

Crowding: where many teeth pushed together and are overlapping each other.

Spacing: where the teeth are spaced out and have gaps between them.

Crooked: where the lengths and turns of the teeth differ.

2.How The Teeth Bite Together

Bite issues require a long treatment because the jaw position needs to be changed. If left untreated, some bite issues can only be resolved through surgery as an adult. The most common bite issues are:

Overjet: where the top teeth are very much in front of (or protrude outward over) the bottom teeth.

Under bite: where the bottom teeth naturally come over the top teeth when biting.

Open bite: where the back teeth meet together when biting, but the front ones do not touch.

Some individuals will have a mix of teeth position issues and bite issues, making their treatments all the more complicated. Some even require more than one type of brace to fix both the bite and straighten the teeth. Without seeing your teeth, the orthodontic clinic is blind to what work needs to be done and therefore cannot provide a price without seeing you.

3.Length of Treatment and Brace Types

Depending on your teeth, bite issues and the type of brace you are suited for, the length of treatment will differ. More severe teeth issues or any bite issue will increase the treatment length as these simply take more time to fix. The type of braces you choose to go with can also impact the length. Invisalign clear brace patients can sometimes finish quicker than regular braces.

With all these variable in play, it is impossible for the clinic to accurately determine the length or reflective price without actually seeing the teeth.

4.Orthodontic Experience

Each Orthodontist (or sometimes dentist) has different prices depending on experience. Similar to a hair dresser, junior stylists will have a low rate and the senior stylists will have a higher rate due their experience are more experienced. Some Orthodontists have over 20 years of experience (like our Dr. O’Donnell) exclusively in braces and instinctively know how to treat you, while other providers may have quite limited experience. Some Orthodontists treat hundreds of Invisalign clear braces patients per year, while others only treat 10 or so. Some providers design the Invisalign treatments themselves, but others have it outsourced. All these factors are also reflected in the price of braces.

So, what’s the best thing to do?

Come in for a consultation! Not only will it accurately determine your or your child’s fee, but it gives you a chance to see if the practice/Orthodontist fits well with your needs. Ask about their experience and the types of braces available to you. Determine how well you or your family get along with the staff and Orthodontist.

Our clinic offers free consultations, so you can receive an accurate quote and learn about all the options available to you!

8 Best Practices If You Have Dry Skin

By | Blog

As we transition from summer into the colder months, people with dry skin can feel more than just the weather changing. Sensitive, dry and itchy skin becomes more prevalent, which can add extra stress and extra steps into a beauty routine. Our aesthetic clinician has listed 8 best practices, products, treatments and the ones to avoid if you suffer from dry skin this Autumn:

1. Drink Loads of Water

Like every other organ in your body, the skin is made up of water. And without proper amounts of water, it will not function at its best. According to UWHealth.org, “If your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by turning your skin dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling.”

By taking care of your skin, it will take care of you!

2. Use Moisturisers and Humidifiers

Moisturisers use a mixture of ingredients to soften the outermost layers of the skin. For dry skin specifically, heavier, oil-based moisturizers are best. Also, if you have a humidifier at home (although Irish residences probably don’t have a need for one), turn it on while you’re at home or sleeping to put more moisture into the air.

3. Stay Away from Exfoliators with Grains

While it is tempting to want to scrub dry or flaky skin off, find the right exfoliator first. Any type that uses grains (little beads) can tear at the skin. Also, try not to over exfoliate, limit yourself to once a week maximum (so not to completely deplete your skin). Gentle scrubs or microdermabrasion treatments are great ways to refresh your skin.

Newpark Clinic now offers medical grade microdermabrasion treatments that are perfect not only for for dry skin, but for patchy skin, oily skin, acne, sun damage and fine lines.

4. Add a Serum to Your Routine This Time of the Year

Full of a high concentration of active ingredients, serums are super heroes to your skin care routine!

Some serum recommendations specifically for dry skin from intothegloss.com include: “vitamin E (an antioxidant, protects cells from oxidative damage), niacinamide (improves skin elasticity, increases ceramide levels in skin), glycolic acid (gently exfoliates and lightens discoloration), and hyaluronic acid (retains moisture).”

5. Avoid Extreme Temperature Changes

Stepping into a living with an open fire, cranking the air con in the car, putting your electric heater on high or taking long, hot showers may give you temporary relief from the outside temperature, but it can seriously affect your skin. Instead, try moderate temperatures until your body can properly heat up or cool down, or dress in layers so you can easily adjust.

6. Use the Right Cleanser and Make-Up Remover

When it comes to cleansing and removing make-up, stick to a cream cleanser. Gel cleansers are more suited for oily skin/combination skin, which could lead to your Skin drying out even more. A cream based or moisturising cleanser/make-up remover, do the job and leave your skin feeling hydrated.

7. Use a Gommage Once a Week

A gommage is another type of gentle exfoliator that uses enzymes to break down the dry, flaky skin. When you rub the gommage off, the dead skin cells go with it, leaving your skin soft and smooth.

According to tripsavvy.com “the word gommage comes from the French word that means ‘to erase’ because the rubbing action is similar to erasing a word written in pencil.” Our aesthetic clinician recommends to this once a week.

8. The Best Product We Recommend for Dry Skin

Epoince’s Medical Barrier Cream

Providing a surge of hydration, this cream is perfect for very dry, scaly or very sensitive skin types. Epoince is an evidence-based skin care line that uses active ingredients for optimal results.

This cream is paraben and fragrance free and uses key ingredients such as: rosa canina fruit oil, white water lily extract, safflower seed oil, apple fruit extract and meadowfoam extract. It can be used daily or as needed. Currently, we have this product available at our clinic for purchase.

What Makes A Good Smile?

By | Blog

WHAT MAKES A GOOD SMILE?

Smiling can have a positive impact on your mood and on the moods of people around you. It can
give you an instant boost, even when you’re having a bad day.

However, not everyone is comfortable smiling. There are a number of problems that can turn a
great smile bad, but there are solutions that can transform any smile.

STRAIGHT, INTACT TEETH

The positioning of your teeth plays a huge part in a great looking smile. If your teeth are crooked,
missing or poorly spaced it can contribute to a poor looking smile and low smile confidence.

Misaligned teeth can be straightened by a skilled Orthodontist. A treatment such as Invisalign can
work wonders with your smile, giving you a huge boost in confidence.

HAVING ALL OF YOUR TEETH

A good smile features all of a person’s teeth. Tooth loss can occur for a variety of reasons, from
untreated cavities to injury. Poor oral hygiene can also lead to tooth loss.

A Periodontist can to help people avoid losing their teeth. There are instances when tooth loss is
inevitable but in many cases periodontists can help you keep your own teeth.

Sometimes there is no option but having an implant to replace a missing tooth. Your Smile
Specialist can work with an implant specialist to straighten your teeth, correct your bite and prepare the space for the implant to go into.

A full set of teeth, apart from looking better, are also needed for proper chewing, biting and eating!

HEALTHY, PINK GUMS

Healthy gums play a big part in creating a beautiful smile. Healthy gums are light pink in colour and firm to the touch.

A warning sign is if your gums have pulled away from your teeth, bleed or feel puffy. You should see your family dentist right away if you have these symptoms. If needed, he will refer you to a gum specialist.

WHITE TEETH

In the Hollywood age we all want bright white teeth. Sadly many foods and drinks stain your teeth.

There are treatments for yellowing teeth:
• Laser whitening
• Specialist home whitening kits from your dentist
• Regular scales and polished in conjunction with a good whitening tooth paste

How to Choose the Right Orthodontist

If you have crooked teeth and would like to discuss your treatment options you should consult with
a Specialist Orthodontist.

Braces Confidence

Braces Confidence

The teenage years can be a traumatic time in the life of your child. Kids are pressured to take
perfect selfies, have flawless skin, and maintain model-like figures.

Many children who have noticeably crooked or unevenly spaced teeth suffer from harassment and
low self-esteem.

Parents have several options:
Traditional braces
Clear or white braces
Invisalign Teen

How does your smile make you feel?

Many teenagers feel self-conscious about their teeth and equally stressed about having treatment.
Traditional braces can draw attention to that part of the body that teenagers most feel stressed
about.

On top of that, brackets and wires can irritate mouths, further compounding stress levels.

If you decide traditional braces are the right choice for your child, some changes will need to be
made :
• No more sticky or crunchy foods
• Avoid contact sports
• Take a break from playing wind instruments

If you’d rather avoid these kinds of compromises, you do have one option left.

Invisalign Teen

Invisalign Teen’s clear plastic aligners are pretty much invisible and are removable, unlike
traditional braces.

This has real benefits for your child:
• Carry on playing contact sports such as rugby or hurling
• No restrictions on diet
• No pictures with a mouth full of metal!
• Clean your teeth and gums as per normal

Still not sure Invisalign Teen is right for your child? See our Invisalign Teen guide to learn
more.

Some more benefits

In only 18 months your child can be brimming with confidence with a beautiful new smile.
Here are a few more factor to consider:
• Invisalign Teen costs about the same as regular braces
• You need fewer appointments
• The aligners don’t break, so no emergencies
• Easy to clean your teeth

Choosing The Right Braces Provider

By | Blog

Making the decision to undergo orthodontic treatment is an important life decision and choosing the right provider is just as vital. The perfection of your new smile will rest in the hands of your chosen individual. We understand the difficulty and importance of this decision process, so we have listed some key points to keep in mind:

  • The difference between a Dentist and Orthodontist: both have degrees in dentistry, but Specialist Orthodontists undergo an additional 2-3 years (full-time) in an accredited orthodontic specialty course focused on the specific treatment of irregularities of the teeth and facial structure.
  • Word of mouth is a great way to receive information about practices. Ask a friend or family member who had braces about their clinic or ask your dentist for their referred orthodontist. Today, “word of mouth” equates to online reviews. Make sure to scope out a practice’s Google (and Google+), Facebook and Yelp reviews to read personal stories and opinions from their patients.
  • Keep in mind if you are visiting many orthodontists, their proposed treatment plans and techniques may differ and there may be different ways to treat the same problem.
  • When comparing fees look carefully at the services included in the price; some practices charge separately for different aspects of treatment while others give one comprehensive fee. Also, enquire about possible hidden fees and payment plans.
  • Lastly, make sure the orthodontist’s and your personalities are compatible. Make sure you feel comfortable in the clinic’s environment and enjoy support from the entire staff throughout the 2-4 year journey of the treatment and aftercare.
