If deciding to get braces isn’t stressful and daunting enough, trying to get a price over the phone seems nearly impossible. Why are the receptionists at these orthodontic practices keeping the price a big secret? It’s the same product right, so why isn’t there a set rate?
Why you ask?
The fact is, there is no big secret or set rate. The orthodontic fee depends on your (or your child’s) teeth, the movement required, length of treatment, type of braces used and the Orthodontist’s experience. So, it’s nearly impossible to give an accurate price without seeing your teeth.
So let’s break the price determination down:
1.Position of Teeth and Movement
Teeth can come in all sorts positions. Some issues are easier to fix (like minor spacing) while others can take a considerable amount of time and work (like severe crowding). Some may have a mix of the issues. For example, individuals can have:
Crowding: where many teeth pushed together and are overlapping each other.
Spacing: where the teeth are spaced out and have gaps between them.
Crooked: where the lengths and turns of the teeth differ.
2.How The Teeth Bite Together
Bite issues require a long treatment because the jaw position needs to be changed. If left untreated, some bite issues can only be resolved through surgery as an adult. The most common bite issues are:
Overjet: where the top teeth are very much in front of (or protrude outward over) the bottom teeth.
Under bite: where the bottom teeth naturally come over the top teeth when biting.
Open bite: where the back teeth meet together when biting, but the front ones do not touch.
Some individuals will have a mix of teeth position issues and bite issues, making their treatments all the more complicated. Some even require more than one type of brace to fix both the bite and straighten the teeth. Without seeing your teeth, the orthodontic clinic is blind to what work needs to be done and therefore cannot provide a price without seeing you.
3.Length of Treatment and Brace Types
Depending on your teeth, bite issues and the type of brace you are suited for, the length of treatment will differ. More severe teeth issues or any bite issue will increase the treatment length as these simply take more time to fix. The type of braces you choose to go with can also impact the length. Invisalign clear brace patients can sometimes finish quicker than regular braces.
With all these variable in play, it is impossible for the clinic to accurately determine the length or reflective price without actually seeing the teeth.
Each Orthodontist (or sometimes dentist) has different prices depending on experience. Similar to a hair dresser, junior stylists will have a low rate and the senior stylists will have a higher rate due their experience are more experienced. Some Orthodontists have over 20 years of experience (like our Dr. O’Donnell) exclusively in braces and instinctively know how to treat you, while other providers may have quite limited experience. Some Orthodontists treat hundreds of Invisalign clear braces patients per year, while others only treat 10 or so. Some providers design the Invisalign treatments themselves, but others have it outsourced. All these factors are also reflected in the price of braces.
So, what’s the best thing to do?
