Dublin Braces New Patients
We understand that choosing to have orthodontic treatment is a big decision and we respect your many questions and concerns you may have. We would work with you each step of the way to make sure your orthodontic care is as comfortable and rewarding as possible. Each treatment begins with a thorough consultation. This will give you the opportunity to meet Dr O’Donnell and our team and learn about all the orthodontic options appropriate to you.
Upon arriving, we conduct a thorough exam of your face, smile and teeth, take a number of specific measurements and a complete set of digital photographs. If you have any x-rays or records taken previously it would be helpful to bring them along to this visit. So, to summarise, on your first visit to us, we will:
- Review your dental and medical history
- Take a full set of orthodontic measurements of your face, smile and teeth
- Digital photographs
- Discuss the various treatment plans appropriate to you
- Explain any associated fees and payment plans
- Address all your queries
At the end of the examination, you will know the following:
- Do I have an orthodontic problem? and if so, exactly what it is
- What tooth movements are required to address the problem
- Duration of treatment
- Cost of treatment
- Risks of treatment
- Retention long-term once the active treatment is complete
- Whether or not extractions are required (a small number of patients with severe overcrowding may need to have teeth removed by their family dentist)
We give you a detailed plan to take home that outlines your appliance design and estimated fees. We provide ample time to answer your questions and you should expect to be with us for 30 to 40 minutes.
When assessing younger patients, Dr O’Donnell will evaluate if this is the correct time to begin treatment. If she feels that treatment is not recommended at this time, she may ask you to return in a number of months so that the growth pattern of your child’s teeth can be monitored. There are a few specific problems where Dr O’Donnell likes to intervene but other than these specific cases, she is quite conservative and likes to wait until a full set of permanent teeth has erupted before beginning treatment, so the maximum gain can be obtained.
