Functional Braces Dublin
Functional appliances are another type of removable appliance but instead of working on either the upper or lower jaw, a functional appliance is designed to fit on both of the jaws together and improves how the upper and lower teeth bite together. Ideally we fit the functional appliances during or just before the pubertal growth spurt, to optimise the effect of facial growth.
We send an impression of your teeth to the laboratory and they send us either a single appliance or sometimes, we request both an upper and lower component that fits together between your teeth. They are very effective in reducing upper incisor protrusion and improve bites where the lower teeth are quite far inside the upper teeth. They are designed to be worn full-time until the desired result is obtained, usually 6-9 months if compliance is good. It is then worn for a period of time in bed only to maintain the finished result.
As they are designed to improve how they upper and lower jaws come together, if there is individual tooth movement required, a short course of fixed appliances are usually fitted once the jaw bite problem has been corrected with the functional appliance.
